Where Should I Place My Ionization Smoke Detector?

5. Garages: Ionization smoke alarms should not be placed in garages because car exhaust fumes can cause them to sound false alarms. This is especially true if the garage is attached to the house.

6. Other rooms: In addition to bedrooms and hallways, ionization smoke detectors should also be placed in other rooms where people spend a lot of time, such as living rooms and dens. This will give you the best chance of hearing an alarm if a fire starts in one of these rooms.

7. Basements: If your home has a basement, install ionization smoke alarms on the ceiling at the bottom of the stairs leading to the first floor. You may also want to place an alarm in each bedroom and outside each sleeping area on the basement level.
